Sheep farming is a way of life in the fictitious town of Llwyncudd, but it is very much a prominent part of Welsh and British culture.
Sheep Breeds in the Green Hills Series
Rhys Kellan breeds Cheviot mules as terminal stock for the meat market. While he cooperates with local shepherds, he is a single shepherd watching over a flock of about 1000 sheep. Border Cheviots are a bit smaller and thus, Rhys finds them more easily managed as a solo farmer (and for Jane). Rhys's grandparents raised Cheviots on their small farm, so he grew up familiar with the breed. He crosses the Cheviots with Blue-Faced Leicesters.
Gwyn James has Welsh Mountain Sheep because that's what she inherited from her grandfather, and she really doesn't do much to take care of them. She considers them to be mostly feral pets and a seasonal art project. She hires Ben Davies to do her flock management.
Ben and Llewellyn Davies (Dôl Rhostir Bryn) have a variety of breeds and specialise in purebred breeding stock. They raise sheep for meat, but they also do purebred heritage breedings for preserving foundation stock.
George Sheppard has Shropshire sheep, which are very large sheep. It's ironic as George is quite short and small but burly. Shropshires make a good orchard breed, which factors into Stewart and Michael's plan to eventually plant some apple trees.
